Black is Beautiful

Black is Beautiful

Sunday’s Best/ Book & Identity Design

This book explores and analyzes the Civil Rights Movement (50’s-60’s) and how it changed fashion, culture, and the very fabric of American pop culture.

I’m inspired by the history of my people, and I wanted to learn more about the movement, but through the lens of fashion and the black perspective as they survived and, assimilated, rebelled, and protested through some of the most tumultuous and challenging times of history.

Process/Challenges

One of the challenges throughout the process was learning to ask the right questions and think outside the box. How do I tell the story of this time period with fashion, accurately, and with so few pages? How can Sunday’s Best be applied to other activations?

I developed a design language that reflected the culture, and the historical context with typography, colors inspired by African Kente cloth, and archival imagery.

System Extension

Sunday’s Best identity and communication was extended to poster design and imagined as an exhibition feature for Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, CA.
